having opened up 2015 with his thumping debut *momentary archive* on lobster theremin, sean dodd aka reflec turns out more rhythmic, melodic rollers for war-torn techno imprint pacific command. exploring darker and deeper shades of techno since his last 12 inch, dodd instills his productions with a breakneck velocity, a runaway mentality that threads its way through all three tracks on the ep.

chris carrier delivers a box of steaming fresh hot techno jams with the latest release from his trusty adult only sub-label, sound carrier. over the last five years he has dropped five eps on the label, with this marking sound carrier’s sixth outing. as usual, the sounds here are a little more entrenched in the techno sound ethic.

in the space of two short years shlømo has quickly established himself alongside the likes of marcelus, bambounou, francois x and the antinote records crew as a key figure in paris’ current techno generation. having established his own taapion records label in 2013 and built a roster around a core of local producers including roman poncet, pvnv and antigone, in addition to enlisting stephen brown, conforce and sterac as remixers for the label’s releases so far. for its fifth release, bright sounds - run by fellow parisian kennedy smith - revisits last year’s rechaïm ep (bsrx003), with a trio of remixers offering their own takes on shlømo’s established deep and expansive sound. first up is the aforementioned 50 weapons artist bambounou, who offers a dynamic groove-based version of the title track that bounces along an elastic kick drum with cut-up fragments of the original’s atmospheric pads providing further impetus. label owner kennedy smith takes on theory is the worst by bringing its dub textures to the for while filling the track’s empty spaces with intricate drum patterns. finally, italian techno pioneer donato dozzy turns grounded queen into a classic dozzy slow-burning techno trip, with his trademark layered sound complimenting the track’s subtle rhythmic backbone.

following up from that brilliant tom dicicco from last year, the notorious gcz is back on his own label. this time he switches the arpeggiators to body and it s all go for a while. two more tool type versions on the flip, for the djs. big tip from one of our favs!

mark e last delivered on futureboogie back in november 2014, so it’s a welcome return to the label for the birmingham based dj & producer. with his merc imprint running on full steam, and previous releases on revered labels like spectral sound and running back, mark is becoming an ever dependent exponent of the real and raw house music vibe, and no more so than on the basement trax ep. basement trax 1, distorted synths wander over a low-slung beat, the marching hi-hats and filter work are tweaked to perfection. it’s a track of basic elements, but done so well, the arrangement building steadily and bags of warmth and soul deep at the heart of this track. the gnarly bass and classic string sounds of basement trax 2 make an ideal companion piece to the a side. delivered in the finest wild-pitch tradition, the raw sounding production packs a punch as the stomping drums and repetitive keys ramp up the heat for a real blazer of an underground club cut.

repress 2016 !! last year stockholm based producer hnny provided us one of the biggest releases on local talk to date. now he’s back with a follow up, yearning, a straight up jackin’ house track to prove he’s not just one trick pony. dirtytwo got lot’s of music planned for 2013 on local talk. first up is a remix of hnny’s ”for the very first time”. this particular version started out as a secret weapon which they guys used in the liveset. mats & tooli heard it and decided that their version had to be released. simply put, the dirtytwo midas touch version is pure gold.

the last couple of years have been huge for pomo, going from a relatively obscure canadian producer to releasing his debut ep on hw&w, remixing for the likes of janet jackson and mark ronson, and touring the globe with disclosure as their hand-picked opening act.
bastard jazz has commissioned pomo to be next in line for the fourth volume of their *tempo dreams* compilation albums, following on the heels of the hotly contested soul clap compiled vol. 3. as with other tempo dreams records, we tease it out with a limited 7 inch release with tracks from the compiler made specifically for the tempo dreams album.
*blue soda* (part 1) - pomos first original release since his ep in november of 2014 is a typical, rollicking pomo new disco joint with stabbing synths, chopped vocal samples and an irresistible bassline. part 2 on the flip-side delivers more of the same, with a little more of an introspective twist. part 2 is exclusive to the 7 inch only and wont be on the album.

cristi cons and vlad caia aka sit conclude their sideways trilogy with three dancefloor oriented tracks, meant to awake different feelings in each one of us. the sample embroidery molded into the pure acid form of angels will leave us smiling in wonder. the fast paced scratch theme from reconnect may satisfy our dancing hunger, or we can just lose ourselves into the myriad filtered bits of shadow, with its breaks sequence as our only guiding path. this is the last piece of the sideways’ puzzle, when the last droplets of energy left inside our bodies, after this 15 tracks long analog ride, are spent for seizing the present. the closing moment, when the curtain falls and our minds are still trying to decipher the hidden message. a message that points out to the diversity of electronic music envisioned through sit s creative touch.

the stealth triple vinyl series presents six tracks taken from peter van hoesens stealth mix compilation. the same philosophy is carried across: it marries peters music with the sounds he is influenced by. the result is a powerful selection of vibrant techno, with a warm, almost spiritual, feel to it. the last instalment of the stealth vinyls focuses on the productions of the time to express founder. reflecting the themes of the series, van hoesen offers his own vision of hypnotic techno on shadows & concern, a powerful and expansive piece. the series is completed in appropriate fashion with unicorn, an emotive track that displays van hoesens more melodic side.

spencer parker returns to radio slaves rekids imprint for two stripped back cuts in the second instalment of ‘no more silly club songs this february. the work them records founder and rekids regular dropped the first four track package last summer, which was a series of tools produced with parkers own dj sets in mind. vol.2 initiates with robust kicks and shuffling hats in silly club song no.5 whilst charismatic chords operate amongst drum rolls and a vocal crying out dance. on the other hand, no.6 follows a similar muscular aesthetic yet incorporates a reese inspired bassline as percussive elements rattle throughout. supported by radio slave, rodhad, dj rolando, marcel dettman, ben sims, mr.g amongst others.

the last release of l.s.g. on superstition the best of l.s.g. - the singles reworked in 2004 is now over 1o years ago. in this days l.s.g. was officially set to finished by oliver himself, in order to create a distance to the former commercial trance scene. from the first day l.s.g. was standing always for a variety of sound directions. some called it trance, downbeat or triphop well, with the slight difference of having 2015, l.s.g is back and has now taken the step into a very deep sound - so to speak: back to the roots and restart.

love notes from brooklyn is proud to present a brand new and promising young american artist in the form of tape hiss. these three moody and emotive tracks fit in perfectly with the label sound love notes has been developing over their last few release. the panic in needle park, the clear standout track, begins the ep with gloomy synth washes at a chugging, pitched down speed. that track is then ably reworked by fellow brooklynite, willie burns, of lies and wt records, who breaks the beat up for a stunted and unique reinterpretation. on the flip, love is a dog from hell brings a little acid to the proceedings, and traces to nowhere closes it out on consitantly dark and moody note. literates will note the bukowski references throughout. another winner for this label

in the follow up to huxleys widow ep aus present their second offering of 2016 and in doing so welcome back two label favourites: timothy blake and marquis hawkes as hawkes & blake both artists made outstanding debuts for aus last year, with hawkes having more than a hand in blakes stormy search ep before delivering his own disco inflected hit chances. now we see a continuation of the studio chemistry as both parties join forces and present love precipitation: a pair of no frills bombs built strictly for the dancefloor. playful piano lines and jubilant synths are propelled by expertly crafted 909 drums throughout, recalling in equal measure the classic garage sound of detroit and the soulful grooves that emanated from new jersey in the 90s. with hawkes & blake aus continue to maintain the high quality in 2016 and offer us an insight into an exciting new production pairing.

garrett david and adam rowe return to stripped & chewed with an accomplished new ep, “now that we are here, where are we?”. also known as the bell boys, the pair were last seen on a funky electro 7” for star creature following 2013’s “hotel garma ep” for discovery recordings. this new five track record finds the chicago-based duo making major strides forward in their already rather mature sound, fusing razor-sharp rhythms with plush melodies informed by deep knowledge of house music history – no surprise from two buyers for chicago institution gramaphone records.

after a successful debut last year, london-based label welfare returns with its second release. once again, music comes courtesy of the label’s owners and is aimed at the dance-floor. zigzagging the grey area between house and techno, hypnotic and relenting moments offered by the turbine hall and anicca are offset by more melodic and experimental sounds of narcopaloma and a is for atom.

spanish dj & producer, eduardo de la calle, has continued to explore the outer limits of the electronic palette since his cadenza records debut back in 2013, clocking up stellar releases for the likes of mule musiq, hivern discs, be as one and nonplus over the last couple of years. eduardo returns to cadenza in february with the ‘anima animus’ single, coupling two tracks of refined techno for your listening pleasure. taking inspiration from the psychologist/philosopher carl jung’s concept of anima and animus (and do take the time to explore this), eduardo marries arpeggiated synths and melodic chords with a soft kick and tantalizing hats, producing a slick piece of reflective techno that’s alive with melody and groove. on ‘north pole’, we get more of the signature ‘de la calle’ sound, subaquatic bass and searing, melancholic strings play out over a steady mechanical beat, nodding its head not only to the detroit masters but also to the european new wave sounds that influenced the motor city artists in the first instance. another assured single release from eduardo that will further solidify his place in the current electronic music landscape.

inoue shirabe is no newcomer for those who have been following antinotes releases last year. with function spring / gravitation of acidtree, his third release on the parisian imprint, the okayamas producer delivers what may be his two most sophisticated tracks so far. with function spring, inoue shirabe continues to investigate the subtle equilibrium between opposite feelings of sadness and joy that he successfully reached on down into the black church, on his previous 12inch. this time, the japanese producer uses celestial elements (bells, an organ in the distance that we can hear punctually) to counterbalance the roughness of the rhythmical section, in order to plunge the listener into a profound state of meditation.

this particular set of songs benefits from having been heavily road-tested over the last two years, resulting in greater distillation and focus.

new york s gunnar haslam appears on l.i.e.s. with his third lp for the label titled lebesgue measures. picking up where he left off on his last long player mirrors and copulation we hear an evolution in his sound throughout the nine songs. still there are the understated yet grooving acid lines next to carefully programmed drums and attention to surrounding detail which creates beautiful and balanced atmospheres. there is a brightness coupled with an underlying sullenness tapping into some sort of mystical and seemingly obscured narrative which moves through the entire record. deep and immersive stuff to say the least.

a firm favourite in the hot creations camp, jey kurmis is back on board the label following his recent kari ep with another killer release in the form of the not too flabbeh ep. the release features two-standout originals, with a heavy duty re-edit of a third original from label boss jamie jones not too flabbeh features belgium producers nukov & yelmet, creating a bona fide hit! complete with tongue in cheek, catchy vocals, rolling bass, and infectious groove, its a winner! jamie jones steps up again, this time to do a reedit of farno, a four to the floor edgy killer. last up is monkle with its tripped vocals and old school stabs!

soulphictions follow-up to last years riot ep delivers the heat again on musik krause!

the bush is a homage to the place where i have lived for the last decade (askew road). the askew road itself is slowly changing so i wanted to document all the places that play a big part in mine and my families lives before they eventually get sold for more flats or tescos. 002 was all about the mighty sun pub which has now been sold and transformed into a costa coffee and an estate agents. next up is our local park which hopefully will never see change as its been our little slice of heaven in w12 since we moved here.

over the past several years, j(ay).a.d has released several eps touching on footwork, dubstep, grime and dancehall, approaching dance music with a wide open lens that tends to blur accepted genre lines. a bjork co-sign earlier last year jettisoned the amsterdam-based artist into the popular consciousness. raised in suriname, j(ay).a.d is the consummate dance music outsider and despite living in amsterdam, his music hardly ever fits in with the citys house and techno hegemony. the ogri ai ep is very much a blueprint record, simultaneously paranoid and dark, its seeped in industrial dread and natural beauty. and while many of j(ay).a.ds contemporaries attempt to create more alien sounding music at the expense of a human element, the ogri ai ep has been a overlooked milestone for the hybrid footwork & grime realm, and its now back on re-stock.

*retraieste romaneste* is a lp in which music speaks for it self, like the translation of the title *relive the romanian way* this original minimal and deep sound of young artist dragutesku brings us one step closer to the roots. the track names are picked after the names of great writers and poets from last century topped by the original artwork, this album makes us relive those moments of pure, inspiring originality once again.

‘escape from reality’ as first track, goes down as a bleeping submarine, deep diving into underwater caves where a slow and hypnotic rhythm reverberates through ears and mind. second cut ‘alchemy’ continues the interdimensional explorations, and after long intro, it gradually detaches from the surface reaching a leaden sky. drums and claps alternates on a soundscape of constant roars, holding the track in a steady mesmerizing jingle. the b-side opens with ‘found myself’, edgy broken beat with a stronger and more club-oriented dynamism which finds its best shot in the last cut ‘chain reaction’. a ravishing synthline drives through tribalesque drums, snares and thunderclaps to close the record with a mystic vibe....

vent is happy to deliver yet another take on stripped back essential techno. stephanie sykes has had the opportunity to entertain many dancefloors since her last ep on vent, and we are astonished with her artistic progression. the sonic imagery is smoky and bass heavy, perfect for those heady dancefloor experiences. and as if the package isn’t perfect already, cassegrain delivers an absolute killer remix with raw, truly minimalistic techno.

though ronde music is a label gathering producers from various horizons, might it be ambient, noise, experimental or electroacoustic, they all have a common creed : the loop. jo created this locked groove label just one year ago, spreading extensively the sensitive patterns of artists such as vadim svoboda, sharp, antigone, edith progue, dscrd and cédric pigot & jow. a single 1 loop bar is to be repeated until harmonies free themselves, patterns are then stretching to the point where they merge into a psychoacoustic phenomenon. -wouldn t it be nice to have this dance last forever ?- ronde music asks all of those who haven t yet joined the round.

a year after his last outing on the label, gunnar haslam is back on delsin with four more tracks of idiosyncratic techno. opening up this ep with the title track, haslam cooks up a spangled brew of erratic synths and spinning hi hats and ties them together with a heavy rubber kick drum. followed by sarsi which is then completely different, its a beatless and emotionally forlorn cut that still manages to take you somewhere special. deep dancefloor business taking over on the b-side. scurrying alien sounds closed by a frenzied techno trip. each track here is different from the last, and each track here is a refreshing proposition from one of the most interesting guys around.

at long last, coalmine records is pleased to release guilty simpson and small professor s highly acclaimed collaborative lp, highway robbery, in vinyl format. weighing in at 11 tracks, which includes the vinyl-only bonus track of zilla rocca s remix of go, the album places the listener in a seemingly post-apocalyptic detroit where the mentality is feast or famine.

with the release of this set of remixes figure head len faki reveals previously unseen shades of both the source material and his own musical identity. produced over the course of last year and originally never intended to come out, the hidden objects were to remain just that – hidden from anyone but faki himself who was privately developing a different side of his in the studio.

released in may of last year, kerrier districts 4 album became an essential long player, not just because it was creator luke viberts first kd album offering in over a decade, but because it captured kerrier district at what it does best funky, sample heavy, entertaining, good time dance music.

huxley follows up last years 2.0 and the launch of his no ideas original imprint with widow, released late jan via will sauls aus imprint. huxleys 2.0 marked a new phase in huxleys production output with the brit eschewing his previous sample driven work in favour of tougher drums, prominent synths and tweaky arrangements. widow continues huxleys explorations into pastures new with three tracks that fold a myriad of influences into refreshingly new shapes while highlighting the producers love of melody.

whirling hall of knives is a collaboration between trensmat founders magnetize and the last sound. harsh smouldering circuits and eruptions of panicky white noise have a profoundly unsettling quality, a sense of gnawing paranoia but interspersed with moments of almost euphoric epiphany, as if in the grip of an unshakeable 4am psychosis a growing sense that the door will be kicked in at any second and the world outside will come pouring in. psyche electronics of a particularly greasy and grime-flecked hue... the remix comes courtesy of downwards duo, talker. the american duo of karl meier and jon krohn (a.k.a stave) turn in a heavyweight version of vacuulum on the flip...

the white noise backdrop of modern life means that without some fine-tuning on our part, even established and progressive artists can become elusive on occasion. but since musical creativity involves a healthy drive to self-determination, and often a keen collaborative spirit, out of earshot doesn’t necessarily mean out of action.
certainly not in the case of junior boys, who’ve readied a new album, big black coat, via city slang. a strikingly energised and intuitively dynamic set that reconnects them to their techno roots without sacrificing their soulful pop nous or riding a revivalist wave, it’s also shaped by what jeremy greenspan and matt didemus have been doing in the five years since their last release.
